Dreams and Fantasies, Magic and Ghosts.
The Petshani is my first dip into the world of magic with witchs and gypsies. Surprising though, because it's something I've always been fascinated by. I've read books on Wicca, on WItchcraft, on Greek Gods, and Gypsy Lore. I've traveled the world and experienced some things that have me completely convinced that there is magic around us. Only not everyone can see/feel it. One time, when I was living in South Africa, I had an encounter with a ghost. I'd just gotten a job at a backpackers retreat running their bar, and had moved into the staff loft. I had a South African surf instructor on one side of my room, and a Swiss handy man on the other. (Yes some day I do plan to write about my travel experiences.*wink*) Anyway, sometime during my first week there I was lying on my bed in the middle of the afternoon, trying to catch a bit of sleep. (Now remember I ran a bar, and the bar was open from 6 pm, until whenver we stopped drinking, sometimes after sunrise..so sleeping in the afternoon was okay) On this day, I couldn't sleep. everytime I closed my eyes, I felt a prescence on top of me, pinning me to the bed with my covers. Not evil or hurtful, but not in an erotic way either. It was very wierd. OH, and I should mention I didn't have any covers on.
Finally, after the third time of this "You're imagining things" lecture to myself, I jumped from bed and went in search of Grant, the surfer. I asked him point blank, "Is there somthing you should tell me about that room?"
He looked up at me, brushed his long blonde hair form his eyes and looked at me curiously. "Why?"
Not, "No." or "What do you mean?" But "Why?"
So I told him what was going on. He said. "Go sleep onth hammock, and I'll fix it."
The next morning when I stumbled into my room to go to bed, there was a home made dreamcatcher, of sorts, hanging over my doorway. I went to bed, no problems. When I saw Grant again I asked him what it was. He said it was made of Willow branches and blessed by the local wiseman. That's it. No one ever told me what the ghost was, or what happend in the past. But I never felt that spirit again.
About three months after that, I was with one of our backpacker tours in a nearby "cultural village" (It wasn't truly where the villagers lived, but it was a re-creation. And there was a ceremony with the Elders. (A dance around a fire sort of thing) At the end of the ceremony one of the Elders walked straight up to me, touched my shoulder and said something in a language I couldn't understand. Grant, who had been across the room, came over and introduced me. It was the wiseman who had made the spiritcharm in my room. Him and Grant spoke quietly for a minute, and the man smiled at me gently before walking away. Grant turned to me and said, "He said not to worry about the spirits that follow you. They're not angry."
I was a bit freaked. And to be honest, a bit flattered. Apparently I have spirits around me. Nice ones. It explains a lot. lol
Still, no matter what I do or how hard I try, I can't seem to contact them, except occassional dreams that remind me of that day in South Africa. I can't even say for sure those dreams are spirits, only that they make me think of the day I was told I had them around me. But, I often wonder if I had any magic abilities what the possablitlies could be.
The Petshani is the start of what I hope will be many adventures for a heroine that does have magic powers, and a dream lover. Because really, all that limits any of us, is our imagination. That’s the magic of writing.

That's a great story! I think that certain people have a natural ability to see and feel more than the physical world around them. When I was young (probably six or seven) I had an encounter with a ghost too. Settle in, here's my ghost story. :)
We were at a campground in New York, near the Massachusetts border. My parents and a group of others decided to go visit Dudleytown. This place is part of the "triangle" of haunted places in Mass (including Salem). Anyhoo, legend has it that it was a colonial settlement built on Indian burial grounds. Many stories abound about crazy or evil things that the residents did. Within a period of time, the settlement was abandoned.
That's when people started seeing ghosts in Dudleytown. Lots of them. I was standing there thinking "this place is boring, it's a bunch of stones and leftover chimneys." That's when I saw something and said "Mom, who's that Indian?"
Mom, freaking out, says "What Indian?"
I say "The Indian standing there with his arms out."
Let me tell me, folks, no one else saw that Indian but me.
Oh, I believe in ghosts and all that supernatural stuff. *shiver* Too many odd things have happened in my life to be a coincidence.
Wonderful story, Sasha, thanks for sharing. I had goose bumps reading it. I totally believe in spirits and angels. Did you ever figure out why this spirit was holding you to the bed. Do you think it was some sort of protection?
Beth~ Very cool. Isn't it coincedental that the Ghost you saw was an Indian, and you like to write historical Westerns?
BTW... did your parents freak out? LOL
Sasha, I was glued to the page reading this! I didn't find it scary reading, I more found it absorbing (got to find a better word) but like it was keeping you safe and secure. Maybe think of it as a security blanket they had over you.
Could you put this into a book? Or do you feel the memory is too special to do that with? Was this experience what inspired you to write this new book?
I have never experienced this, but I loved reading those gothic books like Victoria Holt in HS!
Beware I may have more questions later! Thanks for sharing this!
Cathie
Cathryn~ Thanks! I never did figure it out. I can say that I didn't feel scared by it. It didn't feel like it was trying ot hurt me. It didn't have real loving feel to it either, though. AT the time I was a bit too wierded out to ask too many questions, but it trying to protect me from something does seem like a very plausable thing.
Especially since when I was in South Africa I did have a snake run acorss my bed, (while I was on it) and the floorboard of a bridge I was on break. Niether of these things happend on that day, or even that week. And both could've been hazardous to me, yet weren't. Never mind the whole surfing and shark thing. LOL SO maybe if I'd slept in my bed that day, something else would've happened? It's a thought.
However, I have to admit, it almost felt like...a test. Really. I think it was sort of testing me...to see if I could feel it. I never felt it as strong as I did that day again. Not there anyway.
Hi Cathie!
I thinkthe protection angel has something to it. Like I said to Cathryn, Iit felt almost liek ti was testing me. To see if I was aware. I also think, it was a new to me spirit. Defitintely somethign connected witht that room. I've felt some sort of a prescene at other times in my life, but that one was very unique. And Grant never did tell me if there was on e connected to the loft or not, but he also had a charm over his door. I noticed it about two weeks after he gave me mine, and his was alot older than mine.
As for, did my experience inspire THE PETSHANI, actually, No. LOL
I didn't have a clue what to blog about today...but I wanted somethign that connected in a way to my latest release with AQP. So I was going to write about the magic of writing...then when I started to write, this memory came back. (I was in South Africa in 2002) I never gave that experience a thought when I was writing THE PETSHANI. But now, I look at the story, and think of that experience in SA, and it's eery.
Sasha,I'd feel more scared about the snake than the ghost.
Ok, are you saying there's some story for you about surfing and a shark or was that something with someone else ?
It it was a test, what would it be testing you Sasha? What do you think it taught you for your future?
I hope this doesn't sound silly, but did you give the ghost a name or did they tell you a name? Would you want to go back and visit there? If so why? if not, why?
I think this topic was fastinating. But too I appreciate you sharing it and letting us talk with you about it.

Cathie ~ Nope, I didn;t name the ghost. LOl By testing me, I mean testing to se eif I could feel it? I don't know. To be honest, I didn't think about it a lot after a couple of days. I was in South Africa for 6 months, and I experinced so much asd did so much that I didn't dwell on much. lol
As for would I go back? Oh Yes I would . For sure. One of the friends I made when I lived there (she's from Italy) is going back in October for a few months and I'd dearly love to be able to go back as well)
What did it teach me? That there is way more going on in the universe, and even directly around us, than we can see. *grin*
Did I personally have any shark encounters? Nope. Not other than seeing them. But Grant, the surf instructor, got bumped off his board by one. That was close enough for me. LOL
I did however get to see lots of wild dolphins. :) Even went swimming with them. The first time I saw a dolphin inthe surf wth me it scared the *&%* out of me. I saw a large dark shape and thought it was a shark. (I had ahuge fear of sharks while I was there. Grant, and many of the locals, laughed at me all the time. Until I laughed at his fear of Bears (he'd been to Canada and we talked about hiking and stuff) He was scared to go hiking inthe natioanl park because of Bears. After chatting, we figured it's all in how you grow up, and what you're used to. He saw sharks the same way I see Bears.
Anyway, there was a pod of dolphins that used to come play in the surf every morning for about three weeks. I had no fear going out further to swim with them because when the dolphins were around, we were pretty much gaurenteed there were no sharks around.
After a couple months I wasn't AS scared of sharks. LOL
Ask Away! Ilove that you're intersted. I don't mind talking about any of my experiences and giving my thoughts!
Sasha,
That's a great story! And for what it's worth, there are definitely entities around many of us all the time...sometimes protective, sometimes just benign ones that hang out because we have the right vibration or something. I have a friend who can see the entities around people. It's fascinating to hear what she sees!
If you ever meditate, if you open yourself to it, you can probably "see" one or more of the spirits that are with you. Most people have guardian spirits, whether they be totem animals, angelic-like guardians, or other entities...or, oftentimes, an assortment of all of the above. You said you sometimes see them in dreams, and that's not unusual either. When you do see them in dreams, pay attention because oftentimes it's their way of bringing your attention to something in particular.
Your "ghost" probably was testing you, or, since you were the newbie, just trying to see how you'd react to its presence. The "dreamcatcher" served as a protective shield for you after that. :)
ML
Sasha, Too I didn't know if they told you the ghost's name. It seemed like the owner or the man who put up the dreamcatchers and all, knew there was a ghost, and I wonder if they knew who, if there was some legend over time. See Sasha, I was a big reader of gothics in HS eventhough I don't remember details of the reads, I sure still get the feel of them.
Too, I'm thinking alone the lines that wild dolphins and sharks are not much different in your fears but they do, I believe have different behaviors. I must confess, I don't like camping and all, not because of some fear of a big animal, but because I fear bugs.
This was a great chat!
Cathie
