Funny Equals Sexy
I went searching for inspiration in previous posts on the AQP blog and found the following in a post by Lyndi Lamont:
"As Tom Lehrer said in his brilliant satirical song, Smut:
All books can be indecent books,
Though recent books are bolder,
For filth, I'm glad to say,
Is in the mind of the beholder."
Let's put aside, for the moment, what a huge Tom Lehrer fan I am. Let's even put aside what a huge fan of satire in general that I am.
Let's talk about humor and sex. Specifically, funny men are sexy.
My very first crushes were on (and I'm really dating myself here) Jack Lemmon, Don Adams ("Get Smart"), and the aforementioned Mr. Lehrer, despite the fact that I'd never seen a picture of the man. The common denominator in all three was their sense of humor. None of them were exactly leading man material the way Brad Pitt is, but it didn't matter to me. They were funny.
This fixation with funny men has followed me through my life. I fell for my husband because he told me funny stories about himself. The first movie we ever went to see together was "National Lampoon's Animal House". And to this day we love to watch funny television or movies together, probably because our senses of humor overlap so much. Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" comes to mind. (Did I mention I think Jon Stewart is hot? Okay, okay, I'll stop already. Grin.)
Do you enjoy heroes who are witty? Do you like your sexy stories with a dash of humor? I find that my natural inclination is to write stories that are light in tone--though I've never done one where the hero was fall-down funny. Maybe I should write a story with a comedian or comedic actor as the hero. Or at least a very funny guy. I'm taking ideas and suggestions here for something I could write for AQP. Let me know what you think.
Back later with an excerpt from "Poker Brat". In the meantime, have fun!

Barrie, I couldn't agree with you more about funny being a turn on! I love comedic guys, from Jerry Lewis to Steve Martin to Jim Carrey. The power to make people laugh is powerful, indeed. I was surprised, the times I happened to see Jerry Lewis and Steve Martin in person, at their level of magnetism and intensity. Smart funny is great, too, so I'm with you--funny is super sexy!

Oh, yes. Funny most DEFINITELY equals sexy. And a sexy guy with no sense of humor loses his appeal as soon as that's revealed.
My daughter, who is ten, has a crush on the actor who plays Riley in National Treasure because he's so funny. So it seems to me that funny may be the FIRST thing a female finds appealing.
Shara, how could I have forgotten Steve Martin! He's quite attractive to me. :)
Natalie, I haven't seen National Treasure, but your daughter's on the right track. I think you're right about funny being "the first thing a female finds appealing."
Cheers,
Barrie
For me, it's gotta be smart funny. Not the "oh, look, I'm too stupid to follow a sidewalk without walking into a wall" funny or blooper reel funny. But Jon Stewart or Bill Maher funny, to use a couple political-humor examples.
Shared funny is good too. Then it doesn't have to be obviously smart, but it involves a shared experience used as short-hand for humor. There's definitely appealing about knowing he gets the inside joke you share, even -- especially -- when no one else in the room does.
Barrie,
Glad to meet another Tom Lehrer fan. His songs were LOL funny, but he also had a great speaking and singing voice. That's another thing I find sexy, besides a sense of humor. I first my hubby over the phone. He has a great phone voice, deep and sexy, with just a hint of a Southern accent. :)
Dating myself, too, I have to admit one of my early crushes was Gene Wilder, another smart-funny man.
Glad to have you here at AQP.
Lyndi
Jan and Lyndi, yep, it has to be smart-funny. I can enjoy silly, but smart-funny is best. Jan, I like your comment on shared-funny, too. I'd never considered that before.
Lyndi, thanks for the welcome. I spent seven years as a dj in Boston radio, so voices are very important to me. (I love deep, sexy male voices, too.) One thing radio left me with is a memory for voices. I often recognize an actor's voice before I recognize his face. If he has a distinctive voice, that is.
