The Numbers Game
Today is the fifth anniversary of the release of my first book! It’s with another publisher so I will not go into detail here but anyway, this is a rather momentous date in my personal calendar! August 11, 2001 will stand out in my mind for the rest of my life. Getting a first book actually released is akin to having your first child, graduating from high school, and other landmark milestones of your life, especially if you have dreamed of that moment from early childhood.
I’ve been taking an on-line course in promotion for authors and the ‘numbers game’ was discussed. Sales figures are important to an author, and even more-so to publishers whose existence depends on sales volume! So, go out and buy lots of my books, everyone ;-).
However, the numbers I was planning to talk about today are neither of the above. I’m referring to numerology! It is a quasi-science centering around the vibrations or energy of each numeral, especially those from 0 to 9. I suppose many pooh-pooh it just as they do astrology, but I can’t help but think there probably is some real significance in both.
Let’s try to look at it from a rational point of view. I’m also an amateur astronomer. Long ago in my day job with Air Force, I wrote an historical monograph about the “Space TracK” program which was a world-wide net of observing devices and observers the military used to keep track of the man-made satellites. This was back in the Cold War days when some people were worried the bad guys would spy on us and even maybe send down nasty stuff from the orbiting human-made moons.
There was an extremely elaborate system of calculating the orbits based on the gravitational pulls of the earth, the moon and other extra-terrestrial forces. When we began to go out farther into space things got even more complicated. This whole field of study is labeled “celestial mechanics.” Now my point here is that if various bodies in the solar system and beyond can emit enough energy to effect a lump of matter floating around up there, why would they not also effect the very delicate structure of a fertilized egg and a developing embryo? And perhaps the shock of that energy at the moment said embryo emerges into the outer world might also be significant. Voila, astrology makes sense!
Now taking numbers, they are certainly powerful concepts that impact our lives in many ways. We live by the clock and the calendar—numbers. The prices of everything we need and the money we earn effect our whole lifestyle. More numbers! Numerolgy applies the possible energies of numbers to an analysis of each person and his or her life. Take your life path number. This is the sum of the digits in your birth date. Let’s take Susanne Q. Smith, born April 1, 1965. Numerically, this is 04-01-1965. 4+1+1+9+6+5=25 2+5=7. So, Suz’s life-path is 7. The key word for this life path is Wisdom. We might expect that this lady will be scholarly and studious, serious in her thinking and perhaps mature beyond her years.
However, this one aspect is tempered by others! There is also great significance in the name you were given at birth, your official legal ‘birth certificate’ name. This is something you had no control over but the assumption is made that many influences acted upon your parents when they chose your name. To figure out what the net effect of your name is, we make a simple chart like this:

Then we write down the name, replacing each letter with the corresponding number. Add them all up and reduce to a single digit by further adding. This then is your Expression number. Your destiny or life path number is expressed through this number.
I sometimes use this a little when I develop a character for a story, finding a name that will reflect the person emerging as I write or checking on what the effects of his or her name might be. It is fun and triggers the ‘what if’ mode of thinking so very important to a writer.
I’m going to be blogging again on the 22nd, and will give you a little more fun information then. Meanwhile I’ve got a contest –naturally! lol, Isy...my friends used to say that I was the only blonde-brunette they knew.
Deirdre, it's funny that you use April 1st as your example, because that is my birthday :-) April Fool's day, lol...it should be a national holiday :-)
I used to love reading about astrology and numerology, actually :-)
I think my life path is 9...if I did it right, lol...can't remember what that means.
Isy, it isn't all that hard. Betcha Jenny could do it or will be able to soon. She is in 1st grade, isn't she? So adding starts soon, I am sure. Remember, I am the mathematically challenged one!
BTW "Isy" is an 8 (9+1+7=17 7+1=8)
The names we choose to go by are also significant and often we subconsciously select something that will kind of balance out the aspects we have no control over!
Ali, so far you have a 5 -- 04+01. The final result depends on the year and if you are like me, that is a National Top Secret piece of data LOL. It's a fun thing to play with, kind of a parlor game, which noone does anymore I guess with TV and all the rest. Remember, someone will get a reading come the first of September!

Hey Gwynn, I agree the numbers are fabulous for setting up characterisation...the readings show a lot of possible friction between characters and weaknesses to work on overcoming.....really give vibrant colour to our characters and their problems. Also makes them really seem real and likeable. That should stack up the sales figures then!
