Romantic Places
I'm sitting here wondering what ever possessed me to sign up to blog in the summer. Every week this summer, we spend a few days at home, catch up on laundry, and then go somewhere else! I signed up to blog on July 5th and never got to it - it was between time travelling at Fort Niagara and Ireland - I should have known better.
Anyway, today is between Washington DC and Fort Niagara. I've been trying to think of a way to talk about my Ireland trip, and I have it! Romantic places!
I have to admit, I love to travel. Fortunately, my DH does too. We've been married 20 years (which is why we went to Ireland this summer) and I would say part of keeping our love strong these years has been a committment, through crazy jobs and 3 kids, to take time out and travel alone together. That would make almost any place I've been with him a fondly remembered romantic spot. But I have some particularly special ones:
1. Ireland (of course I'm going to start with this!) Quaint city streets, bustling pubs, breathtaking scenery, castles - I love Ireland. I'm not Irish and I don't have rels there - I just love the ancient history and the incredibly friendly people.
Thatched roof cottage, Bunratty Castle:

2. Niagara-on-the-Lake, Pillar and Post Inn: NOTL has wonderful summer theatre, great shops, amazing food, sumptuous Inns. The Pillar and Post has the Thousand Fountains Spa, where've I've spent way too much money and not enough time with massages, etc. We've had horse drawn carriage rides under blankets in April. Need I say more?
3. Art museums - these are places my kids do not like, which makes them especially romantic! I have great memories of sharing Monets and DaVincis, at the AGO in Toronto, The Metropolitan in NY, the British Museum in London, the National Gallery in Washington, and the Albright Knox in Buffalo. And most of these places (being art museums after all) have amazing restaurants.
4. Kananaskis, Alberta – This is a place in the Canadian Rockies where the G8 summit was once held – probably because it’s so isolated and there’s only one road in. I took a walk and turned around – I was surrounded by mountains, 360 degrees. I did not want to leave!
Kananaskis:

5. 18th century balls – ladies in long, poufy skirts, hours spent getting dressed, gentlemen in silk and velvet, polite and gentile manners, gentle flirting, elegant, stylized dancing. These events define romantic. Even my MTV era teenagers like them! They’re one of the great joys of reenacting.
DH and I in our 18th century finery:

Well, it’s only going to be a top 5 list today. What are some of your favorite romantic places? I’d love to add a few to my list.
I’ve got a contest running this week. I started a new yahoo/newsletter group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kelseylewiserotica/. Anyone who joins this week will be entered into a draw for a $10 Amber Quill gift certificate (drawing on Monday, Aug 21).
Thanks!

Hi, Kelsey :-)
When I was younger, I was fortunate enough to get to live on one of the Hawaiian Islands, Oahu. I think this is a wonderfully romantic place. The sunsets and beaches are just beautiful. I'm sure the sunrises were too, but who's up that early? lol I'm hoping to go back and visit one day :-)
Kelsey,
So glad you and your hubby enjoyed your trip to Ireland. I've always wanted to go there. Maybe someday.
One of my favorite romantic places is Sedona, AZ. My hubby and I love to go there and we always go out to Airport Mesa to catch the sunset, which is sometimes quite spectacular. It's such a beautiful spot, with the blue sky and the red and white rock formations, and it has such incredible energy.
Btw, I was in Niagara-on-the-Lake once, in December! It was cold but sunny and it was awesome to see the Falls surrounded by snow. Beautiful area.
Quebec is another favorite romantic spot of mine. So quaint.

Hi Kelsey,
Paris, of course. Go down the steps and walk along by the river and under the bridges as it starts to get dark and the lights are coming on.
Old Montreal with its cobbled streets and wonderful restaurants.
Cassis-sur-Mer in Provence--the beach is all rocks, but the sun is hot and the sea and sky so blue, and I'm halfway through a story featuring this little known corner of France.
And that Pier in San Francisco where they cleared out the boats to make room for the seals. Dh took me there for lunch on my a birthday a few years ago. We'd been to Reno for the weekend, stayed overnight in Fairfield, took a trip around Napa and got back to SF in time for lunch. One of the most memorable days we ever spent together, and nmaybe one of these days we'll do it again.

Hi Kelsey,
My husband and I love the Pocono Mountains in NE PA. We have a favorite adults-only resort that we frequent. Very romantic!
Romantic for me is any place I don't have to cook and clean. LOL.

Anywhere in nature that's really secluded. It can be in an open field, by a lazy river, in the woods, anywhere in nature. :) I'm a nature freak. I don't like the city and yet I'm stuck here. lol I take long walks in the woods and to me that would be the most romantic because it's so quiet and you feel at peace. Of course you would probably need to bring a blanket and would have to find somewhere flat and uncovered with sticks and pine needles and cones. lol :)
I love my native Virginia, Kelsey, but one of my favorite places (and I get to visit often because my friend lives close by) is Bar Harbor, Maine. =)

There's a beautiful stretch of white sand beach at Canaveral National Seashore in Florida that's gorgeous and romantic! I've only been there once, but what a setting. It was completely empty except for us. :)
